Mass
march against the FTAA
•
Anti-war demonstrations planned in the world’s
largest cities
THE
World Social Forum bade farewell to Porto Alegre
with a mass march against the Free Trade Area of the
Americas (FTAA) project and a call for protest
demonstrations against war, neoliberal globalization
and other political, economic and social ills
affecting peoples.
A
parallel call went out against anti-Venezuelan
militarization and economic aggression and the
blockade of Cuba imposed by the United States for
more than 40 years.
Simultaneous
protest marches against war on Iraq are to be
organized and supported by social movements in the
30 largest cities of the world.
In one
of the forum sessions, eminent U.S. linguist Noam
Chomsky stated that the Bush administration is
stirring up fear and terrifying the U.S. people in
order to justify its proposed war on Iraq.
Arundathi
Roy, the prestigious peace activist, affirmed that
the most ridiculous lie used to justify the
aggression is the alleged U.S. commitment to
bringing democracy to Iraq. Killing people under
that pretext is a sport much practiced by the United
States, he warned.
