More than 70 centenarians in
Matanzas province
WITH
a population of 660,000 inhabitants, the western
Cuban region of Matanzas is home to more than 70
people aged 100 years and over, according a
statistical study carried out in the province’s
capital city.
Matanzas, situated some 100 kilometers from eastern
Havana, has centenarian inhabitants in 12 out of the
14 municipalities that make up the area.
According to the report, amongst the longest-lived
Matanzas residents, women dominate, 46 of them have
suffered no major illness and the eldest is a man
born on May 4, 1888, that is to say, who is 115
years old.
Demographic specialists on the island warn that the
Cuban population is showing a tendency for
longevity, particularly in Matanzas where there are
already 100,000 people classed within the older
adult group. (EFE)
