CUBAN MATURE BARREL PROOF RUM
Arrives on the market with a Gold Medal
BY MIGUEL COMELLAS THE new Cuban mature barrel proof rum, from the Havana Club label, has been officially launched in Havana.
Attended by the national and foreign press, its tasting at the Museum of Rum served as a celebration for the gold medal it won in Chicago, USA. This new Cuban product of
excellent quality competed with another 100 labels from several countries, and the Institute of Alcohol Testing awarded it the prize, notwithstanding the fact that Havana Club is not marketed in the United States. Its quality outweighed the blockade.
The Barrel Proof rum, in liter-sized bottles, is now ready to be sold as a quality item in duty free shops in several countries. At 45-degree proof the new drink is
bottled directly from a white oak barrel, the first phase of aging the eau de vie, distilled from molasses cane from selected sugar. Philippe Coutin, the new director in Cuba of the French firm Pernod Ricard,
attended the press conference. Pernod Ricard and Cuba Ron is a French-Cuban joint venture, started in 1994 for the manufacture and distribution of Havana Club rums in 100 countries. Juan González, vice president of Cuba Ron said that the Cuban Barrel Proof is the result of diligent work by Cuban rum makers, in this case chemical engineer and professor José
Navarro, who with this drink, dark amber in color with no purification and dilution, and an exceptional lightness and pleasant taste has created one of the Cuban distillery industry’s most significant successes in the last 45 years. Regla Jiménez and Stefano Oldrat, marketing directors for Havana Club International, recalled how this brand of rum that dates from 1878, produced Cuba’s signatory drink that currently occupies a prominent place among the 100 millionaire brands in the
world.
