Cuba’s Hotel Nacional – the best in
the world
CUBA’S
Hotel Nacional, declared a World Heritage site by
UNESCO and considered emblematic of Cuban hotels,
has been declared Best Hotel in the World by
participants in the 4th Survey by elmundoviajes.com
A total
of 194 hotels received at least one vote by
participants in elmundoviajes.com’s 4th Best Survey,
who decided that Hotel Nacional was the best in the
world. This magnificent Havana facility ranked third
in the survey’s previous edition.
The
legendary hotel thus displaces last year’s winner,
La Mamounía (Marrakech, Morocco) and also displaces
the third place of Paris’s The Ritz, in spite of the
fact that both of them obtained a larger percentage
of votes than in 2003.
According to the 4th Survey’s statistics, hotels in
Cuba, Mexico and New York received a considerable
number of votes.
The
Hotel Nacional, which has more than 70 years of
history belongs to the Gran Caribe hotel chain, has
a privileged location, from which a large part of
Havana Bay, the Malecón and the surrounding
neighborhood can be seen, and stands out for its
refined elegance.
This
establishment today qualifies as one of Cuba’s best
hotels. Its location in the liveliest part of the
city and more than half a century of experience in
the hotel business makes it a classic by
distinction.
With
its more than 400 rooms, the majority with a ocean
view, 16 of them suites and one a presidential
suite; its executive floor, Internet café, and
various bars, restaurants, dining rooms and stores;
its House of Habanos and the distinctive Cabaret
Parisién, there is no doubt of its luxurious and
special place within Cuban tourism.
The
magnificent qualities of Hotel Nacional have
captivated hundreds of celebrities in the arts,
sciences and politics over the years, including
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill; artists
like Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Johnny Weismuller,
María Félix and Jorge Negrete, and scientists like
Alexander Flemming, who discovered penicillin. Many
others have left their mark in the hotel’s gardens
and halls.
