Calls for the
release of the Five in Peru
BY RAIMUNDO LOPEZ
LIMA, Nov 12 (PL.).—Today was the culmination of
another national action organized by Peruvian groups
calling for the release of the five Cuban anti-terrorist
fighters imprisoned in the United States since 1998.
Representatives of those groups campaigned by
collecting signatures and other letters of support
to be sent to the U.S. government, international
organizations, the Cuban authorities and the
patriots themselves.
The prominent political leader Gustavo Espinoza,
president of the Peruvian Solidarity Committee for
the Five Patriots, reported that members of the
Peruvian-Cuban Casas de Amistad, trade union and
political organizations participated in the
activities.
Delegates at the 5th National Solidarity with
Cuba Meeting, held last month from October 7 to 10,
ratified the struggle for the freedom of the five
heroes as one of their main tasks.
Espinoza, former congressman and director of the
monthly Nuestra Bandera, explained that
petitions will be collected tonight at the
headquarters of the National Telephone Workers Union.
"This is a task of honor, which we Peruvians will
also fulfill with honor because it demonstrates that
in our country solidarity is not only a theoretical
concept but concrete action," he informed Prensa
Latina.
He indicated that participants can also sign a
solidarity book which, together with the petitions,
will be sent to international organizations as part
of a campaign to support the release of the Five.
Additionally they can send their own messages,
letters, greetings, communication and expressions of
support to the five patriots, which will be
forwarded to prisons in which they are presently
confined.
He emphasized that this will be another way of
supporting Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, René
González, Gerardo Hernández and Ramón Labañino, whom
he referred to as victims of imperialist perfidy.
