Summer tourist
high season closes
CUBA has closed its high season for
tourism with an increase in the average rate of
visitors, in the main arriving from Canada, the
United Kingdom, Spain and Italy, the central source
countries for the island.
The ANSA news agency reports that
Ministry of Tourism figures also show a record of
44,415 tourists in one day (August 10) staying in
international hotels, a figure that exceeded the
40,026 record of last summer.
The regions of Jardines del Rey,
Holguín, Varadero and City of Havana have received
more visitors according to authorities in the
sector, the principal source of the national income,
which generated profits of $2 billion with 1.9
million visitors last year.
The Cuban accommodation
infrastructure has more than 40,000 rooms
distributed in 273 hotels, 60% of them four- and
five-star.
Cuba has advanced in consolidating
itself as a Caribbean tourist destination, and this
year more than 2.1 million visitors are anticipated.
China has designated the island a
preferred tourism destination, based on a bilateral
agreement signed last year allowing Asian agencies
to promote organized group travel to Cuba.
