British MPs against aggression of Cuba
AN overwhelming majority of
British MPs, including Prime Minister Tony Blair,
have made written declarations affirming that they
would not support any military action against Cuba
on the part of the United States.
A report from the UK Cuba
Solidarity Campaign presented on September 21
revealed that 79% of parliamentarians who responded
to letters from their constituents on the issue of
the U.S. policy of aggression toward the island
stated that they would not support any Washington
military action and in addition, believed that the
Bush administration should change its Cuba policy.
The majority of the 402 MPs
who replied in writing believe that U.S. foreign
policy has exacerbated poverty for 11 million Cubans
and damaged the country’s economy.
In a letter to a member of
his constituency, Peter Hain, leader of the Commons,
stated: “I am absolutely opposed to military action
being taken against Cuba and also opposed to the
continuing blockade of Cuba by the US. I visited
Cuba two years ago and was very impressed with the
social advances that have been made despite all the
pressure from the U.S.” |
