Cochabamba: capital of South American integration

COCHABAMBA, Bolivia Dec. 6 —. This Bolivian city is becoming the capital of continental unity, according to organizers of the Social Forum for Integration of the Peoples, which begins today, and the 2nd South American Summit of Nations (CSN), to open this Friday.

Pablo Viglieti, of the event’s organizing committee, confirmed to Prensa Latina that about 2,500 delegates from more than 20 countries and 60 organizations have registered for the discussions.

About 13 issues will be discussed at workshops that will precede the meeting in the auditorium of the Instituto Americano, set for tonight.

According to Viglieti, the issues of defense and militarization are pressing ones that will be discussed by farmers, workers, other indigenous people, intellectuals and members of religious groups from the region.

They will also address other matters of concern for civil society, such as health and education, as well as institutions, asymmetries and trade.

Migration and citizenship; the environment and biodiversity; water, justice and impunity; financing, agriculture and food sovereignty; as well as social rights, jobs and decriminalization of the coca leaf, will all be topics up for discussion, he explained.

According to Juan Carlos Gremio of the organizing committee, more than 1,000 visitors are expected.
