Best athletes of 2006 in Cuba

Guillermo Rigondeaux were selected as the best
athletes of 2006 in Cuba, from a survey of the
National Sports Institute (INDER), which also
elected baseball the most outstanding team sport.

According to the 130 votes of
INDER specialists (74) and members of the Sports
Writers Circle of the Cuban Union of Journalists
(56), this year’s analysis included representatives
of 10 disciplines.
Baseball was chosen as the most
outstanding team and collective sport, while
athletics was the best individual sport and cyclist
Lisandro Guerra novice of the year.
The most outstanding athletes in
the collective category were volleyball player Rosir
Calderón and baseball player Pedro Luis Lazo.
Athlete Dayron Robles headed the
Top Ten list, followed by judoka Yanet Bermov,
weightlifter Sergio Alvarez, canoe pair Serguei
Torres-Karel Aguilar, wrestler Mijail López and
chess player Leinier Domínguez.
The list is completed by athlete
Yoandry Betanzos, boxer Yoranis Ugás and baseball
players Yulieski Guriel and Ariel Pestano.
Tomás Aces in swimming, and
capital resident Faustino Hernández, athletics, were
nominated as the most outstanding international and
national referees, respectively, while Roberto José
Miranda Rodríguez, from City of Havana, the best
physical education teacher.
Erick Hernández and Yunedis
Castillo received the most votes in specialist
sports and sports for people with disabilities, in
that order.
Special recognitions went to José
Quesada and Yans Izquierdo, jai alai; Michel Batista
and Yandry Garzón, wrestling; Yoandri Hernández,
weightlifting; Yoanka González, cycling; Imaday
Núñez, swimming; and disabled athletes Carlos
Larduet, chess; and Adonis León, swimming, all of
them world medalists.
In the Prensa Latina survey,
Calatayud was recently the most outstanding athlete
of Latin America and the Caribbean, and likewise
athlete Robles, judoka Bermov and weightlifter
Alvarez were included among the top ten. (AIN)
