Trial
of terrorists Santiago Alvarez and Osvaldo Mitat
postponed
MIAMI, May 7.—The
trial of the Cuban-origin terrorists Sanntiago
Alvarez and Osvaldo Mitat, charged with illegal
weapons possession, has been postponed to May 15 due
to a decision by the Fort Lauderdale Federal Court.
At the last minute Judge James I. Cohn decided to
delay the trial, due to begin today, for another
week.
Cohn virtually rejected all the arguments
presented by the defense during the preparation
phase, only accepting the petition to disallow as
evidence a false Guatemalan passport and other
documents seized by the police during a search of
Alvarez’ office in Hialeah last November.
The appeal for a change of venue to Miami was
disallowed some weeks ago without convening a
hearing.
The prosecution has stated that the accused have
plotted armed incursions into Cuba for years, and
that Alvarez even stashed munitions and explosives
in a deposit in Cayo Guinchos, Bahamas, impounded by
the Coast Guard last August.
