Fidel awarded honorary diploma at
Science and Technology Forum

Eight special distinctions and 37
prizes for important
projects awarded
HAVANA, Jan. 25 (AIN) —. An honorary diploma was
awarded to Cuban President Fidel Castro in the name
of the three million grass-roots level participants
in the 15th National Science and Technology Forum,
which ended here on Thursday.
Carlos Lage Dávila, member of the Political Bureau
of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), received the
award on behalf of Fidel, who was recognized as the
main creator of the “Energy Revolution,” considered
to be the most important and strategically
farthest-reaching result of science and technology
in Cuba.
The
likewise members of the Political Bureau Esteban
Lazo, Yadira García, Jorge L. Sierra, Concepción
Campa and Ulises Rosales also attended the closing
ceremony, at which eight Special Distinctions were
awarded, signed by General of the Army Raúl Castro,
second secretary of the Central Committee of the PCC,
for the best contributions.
These contributions include the development of a
pentavalent vaccine, the substitution of
manufactured gas with methanized gas, and pressed
paper, the latter a contribution from young Pioneer
Eric Rey Cáceres, of the Nueva Paz municipality in
La Habana province.
The
other winners were the electric power project for
assembling field hospitals in Pakistan, the
automation of meteorological radars, and educational
software for the national education system.
Representatives of the National Association of
Innovators and Rationalizers, the Youth Technical
Brigades and mass organizations and institutions
presented certificates to the creators of 37
important scientific projects at the forum, which
met in the International Convention Center.
One
of these refers to the use of Cuban antiretroviral
medicine by AIDS patients, products similar to those
of developed countries, attained by Cuba’s Pedro
Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute.
Another outstanding project was the new technology
for recombinant streptokinase, attained by the
Center for Molecular Immunology, one of the
institutions in the Western Havana Scientific
Complex.
The
Cuban vaccine to combat Type B haemophillus
influenzae, the only one of its kind in the
world attained via chemical synthesis, produced by
the Center for Synthetic Antigens, was also included
among the forum’s top projects. The jury evaluated
431 projects selected at the grass-roots, municipal
and provincial meetings.
Likewise, the prize ceremony also recognized a
project for comprehensive treatment of chronic
kidney disease and one for the improvement of the
National Electric Power System.
In
addition, special recognition went to 24 scientific
research, university, health care, polytechnic
institute, industry, enterprise, cooperative,
agroindustrial complex and other groups.
