Cuban university exhibits its
advances in Informatica 2007
HAVANA, February 15 (PL) —. The University of
Computer Science (UCI), created at the initiative of
President Fidel Castro, is demonstrating today the
work carried out by this institution to develop this
sector in the country.
Its stand is exhibiting more than 20 software
products and diverse informatics systems, as well as
different cooperation projects with the Venezuelan
PDVSA company.
All the products presented at the International
Informatics Convention 2007 were created by students
at this university conceived by the Cuban leader as
a center of excellence.
Among the products exhibited by the UCI students at
the informatics fair is a system for generic
identification in line with users’ needs.
In addition, it was students from this Cuban
university who created the website for PDVSA and are
currently working on its Intranet site.
Other models from this educational institution
include a driving simulator, virtual games and games
systems for cell phones, Francisco Javier Hernández
Cao, rector of the First Faculty at UCI, commented
to Prensa Latina.
The center has also developed a system of
tele-banking, telephone payments for the population
and applications for the healthcare system, such as
a PACS image system that interacts with medical
equipment.
This technology has been installed at the Hermanos
Ameijeiras Hospital and a pilot project is being
carried out to install one at the William Soler
Cardio-Center.
Also included in the fair is the distribution of
free software called Novalnx, a form of Linux
created by UCI, explained Lissette Soto Palegrín,
director of production at the university. •
