Heavy attack in Baghdad leaves 60
dead and 150 injured
BAGHDAD, February 12 (PL).—At midday today a
shattering explosion that left 60 dead and 150
injured rocked this capital, submerged in chaos due
to extreme security measures applied by the
authorities in conjunction with the U.S. occupying
forces.
The count of victims of the attack in the popular
market in Shorja on the East bank of the Tigris is
partial and could increase in the next few hours
given the force of the explosion and the busy venue.
Two explosive devices went off, damaging various
establishments and cars, say witnesses, referring to
Dantesque scenes of death and destruction.
The new losses raise to 3,120 the number of U.S.
officials and soldiers killed in Iraq since the
United States invaded and occupied this Arab country
in 2003.
The explosion, located in the eastern quadrant of
the capital, generated a dense column of smoke
visible from various points.
This morning’s explosion follows a cruel Sunday
during which 17 police agents died in resistance
actions in the north of the country, according to
the latest reports from the Ministry of the
Interior.
