Canadian Tuft wins Vuelta a Cuba
By Joel García—Special for Granma daily—
THE 32nd Vuelta a Cuba cycling
championship has ended with a new winner, Canadian
Svein Tuft, while the national sextet recovered the
collective cup, and took off the rest of the titles.
The Vuelta is history and motive for reflection in
terms of a show superior to that of the last 15
days.
The
final stage covered a circuit of 3.6 kilometers of
the capital’s main arterial roads, ending at the
Capitol building. Venezuelan Anthony Brea stole part
of the show by coming in second and first in the two
races, located in tours 10 and 15.
That task forced Pedro Pablo
Pérez to make a greater effort so as not to lose the
red score shirt. He came in second in the sprint
finish behind the Venezuelan – the only cyclist to
win three stages of this edition – and thus
celebrated his one-point victory (104-103) in this
section.
Minutes after the presentation
Tuft praised the quality of his closest rival, the
idol of Taco-Taco, who he viewed as very strong, as
well as the classic in a general sense. “I would
have liked 10 days against the clock,” he said
smiling, in reference to the test in which he ruled
with a speed record that will be very hard to exceed
in the future.
