Laurence Olivier
Prize for Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta
HAVANA, February 19 (PL).—The outstanding Cuban
dancer Carlos Acosta has been awarded the Laurence
Olivier Prize for the best show presented on London
stages during 2006, its representative Heriberto
Cabezas informed Prensa Latina.
The
performance at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in the
British capital in June last year and conceived of
as the beginning and end of a rehearsal, included
invited artists from the London Royal Ballet.
The dancers enter and greet each other, do their
warm up exercises, brilliantly interpret their solos
or pas de deux and modestly receive, with even a
hint of disdain, the applause of the public.
Between one piece and another, props staff and
technicians cross the boards to accentuate the air
of apparent informality that Acosta imposed, with
sagacity, on his work.
The performance left a trail of praise in its
wake, the culmination of which is this prize,
intended to distinguish the most outstanding piece
on the London stage in the last 12 months.
