Cuba dominates Track Cycling
World Cup
BY OSCAR SANCHEZ — Granma daily staff writer —
ONCE again, cycling is making
headlines in Cuba’s sports news. Yoanka González,
Lisandra Guerra and Yumari González have
accomplished a real feat in the Cycling Track World
Cup series, which was held in four stages: Sydney
(Australia, in November 2006); Moscow (Russia,
December of that year); Los Angeles (U.S.A., January
2007) and Manchester (United Kingdom, last week).
All three of the Cubans finished
in first place in their categories after the four
stages were computed: Yoanka in the points race,
Lisandra in the 500m time trial, and Yumari in the
scratch, for Cuba’s best showing in that
competition.
They also took Cuba to the top of
the women’s finals in the Cup, because out of seven
categories, Cuba finished with three first places,
beating Britain, with two, and Holland and China,
with one each.
The Cuban women also consolidated
the country’s place among the brightest and best of
world cycling, taking 11th place in the world
ranking among more than 120 national teams.
From March 29, in Palma de
Mallorca, the trio will have another baptism of
fire, when they go there to fight for the Track
Cycling World Championship.
