Al Gore documentary
wins an Oscar
LOS
ANGELES.— An Inconvenient
Truth, a documentary
by ex-U.S. Vice President Al Gore, won an Oscar for
the best documentary last Sunday night in an edition
in which Latin American cinema had its moment of
glory with three statuettes for the Spanish-Mexican
film El laberinto del fauno by Guillermo del
Toro (Best Photography, Best Makeup and Best
Artistic Direction).
Gore has become a champion of the
battle against climate change and global warming.
His documentary was screened on Cuban TV last week
in the “Roundtable” slot.
The U.S. politician collected the
statuette with the documentary’s director Davis
Guggenheim and producers Lawrence Bender and Laurie
David. After receiving his prize, Gore affirmed that
something has to be done on an issue – that of
climate change – that transcends political ones, is
a moral issue and is in people’s hands to solve.
The coveted Oscars for Best Film
and Best Director went to The Departed and
its director Martin Scorsese. British Helen Mirren (The
Queen) displaced Spanish Penelope Cruz as Best
Lead Actress, the men’s version of which went to
African-American Forrest Whitaker for The Last
King of Scotland.
