5TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON SATISFACTORY LONGEVITY
Science and Technology for quality of life
• Sponsored by the 120 Years Club and the Medical Association of the Caribbean, May 22-25 in Havana’s Nacional Hotel

ADVANCES in science and technology in the function of reaching 120 years of age with quality of life is the principal theme of the 5th International Satisfactory Longevity Congress: an Integral Vision, scheduled from May 22 to 25 in the capital’s Nacional Hotel.

Dr. Eugenio Selman-Housein Abdo, president of the 120 Years Club and the organizing committee for the event, informed Granma International that this edition is to specifically cover the importance of physical education in the function of longevity and quality of life,  and the role of plastic and reconstructive surgery in achieving that objective.

Selman, likewise president of the Medical Association of the Caribbean – an organization co-sponsoring the Congress – explained that he is to moderate a symposium presenting “Cuba, the country for living to 120 years” and that there are others on Nutrition and Surgery, moderated by Professors Santa Jiménez and Antonio Portilles, respectively within the framework of “Obesity: Pandemic of the 21st Century.” Professor Pedro López Saura, deputy director of the Havana Genetic Engineering and Technology Center, is to give a master lecture on Cuban biotechnology in the function of longevity.

 Scientists from all branches of knowledge are expected to discuss these experiences in Cuba, where all sectors of society come together in an articulated way in function of the life of human beings.

A special activity within the event will be the 3rd International Meeting of Centenarians. The island currently has 3,000-plus people aged 100 and over, a group of whom are to participate in the activity.

The 4th Joie de Vivre Festival is scheduled to run in parallel with the Congress and includes a specialized recreation and learning program. In addition, participants can attend lectures in the event that they might find interesting.

There are to be demonstrations of certain physical exercise techniques, a swimming contest for the over-80s, the eternal youth walk (including children, young and older adults, athletes and outstanding personalities) and exhibitions by Cuban artists, craft and culinary workers.

Organizing committee meetings are attended by officials from agencies representing the six areas or regular sections covered in these congresses: motivation, alimentation, health, physical activity, culture and environment.
