Families of soldiers killed in Iraq
protest in London
LONDON, Feb. 23 (PL).—Relatives of British soldiers
killed in Iraq have set up camp outside the
residence of Prime Minister Tony Blair in this
capital, as the start of a series of protests
against the British military presence in that
country.
During the 48-hour demonstration, the protesters
will demand a meeting with Blair to press him to
order the withdrawal of the troops from Iraqi
territory.
The Military Families against the War organized the
camp after which the members will join a national
march through the heart of London calling for the
return of those troops.
The group of families of the dead soldiers was
founded by Rose Gentle, mother of Royal Highland
Fusilier Gordon, aged 19, killed on Iraqi territory
in June 2004.
In alliance with the United States, Britain invaded
the Arab state in March 2003 and still has more than
7,000 soldiers deployed there. The total of soldiers
killed currently stands at 150.
