Ecuadorian electoral court dismisses 52 Congress
members
QUITO, March 7.—The Supreme Court
of Ecuador (TSE) announced this Wednesday that it
has dismissed 52 Congress members who had sacked
Jorge Acosta, president of that body, for convening
a referendum on a Constituent Assembly, AFP reports.
According to ANSA, Acosta himself
announced that the TSE plenary, the maximum
authority of the country when a voting process is
underway, dismissed and suspended for 12 months the
political rights of the deputies who voted for his
removal, for attempting to “dismantle the TSE and
prevent the referendum taking place.”
The magistrate was referring to
the 52 legislators of the right-wing coalition who
removed him from his post on Tuesday and replaced
him with his substitute, as a reprisal for his
having convened the referendum for April 15, which
will define the Constituent with full power to
dissolve Parliament.
“As a result, we are asking the
authorities to take immediate legal action,” Acosta
added.
