Fidel converses
with presidents of Venezuela and Haiti
PRESIDENT Fidel Castro Ruz has talked on the
telephone with Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and
his Haitian counterpart René Préval, to whom he
confirmed the island’s support for his people.
The leader of the Cuban Revolution also praised
Chávez’ effort to visit several countries within the
region in such a short space of time, "defying risks
and tiredness" and described the South American
leader’s speeches as "brilliant".
When Chávez asked how Fidel was feeling, Fidel
replied: "Good, very good," and stressed that he was
following everything related to the Latin American
and Caribbean tour.
The telephone conversation took place whilst
Chávez was meeting with Préval and Cuban Vice
President Esteban Lazo of the Council of State –
also on a visit to Haiti – and other high-ranking
officials from the three governments.
Fidel asked the Bolivarian leader to pass the
phone to the Haitian president who expressed his
satisfaction with the events: "It’s almost a
revolution here. It’s your fault ¼
Maestro," he said.
"It’s you who have multiplied," commented the
leader of the Cuban Revolution, and described the
Haitian people as hard-working and fighters.
Chávez, who was amazed at the youth potential in
Haiti, commented that with their help it would be
possible to carry out a program like Frente Miranda,
with the aim of building homes, with water and
electricity.
"I told René (Préval) right now that it’s
important for them to join the ALBA straight away,"
said Chávez.
"What is taking place at this time is an
unpublished page in history," emphasized Fidel.
At one point in the conversation – which took
place on Monday 12 at 19.37, Chávez praised the
beauty of Haiti, particularly its beaches and the
city. •
