U.S. intensifies
attacks on Iraqi civilians
BAGHDAD, March 13.—At least 18 civilians have
died as a result of U.S. helicopter attacks in the
north and northeast of Baghdad, reported EFE.
Meanwhile, PL reported that Baghdad’s Attorney
General Omar Abdul was shot dead on Tuesday by
unknown gunmen.
The U.S. Air Force also bombed people it believed
to be insurgents on a highway bordering Iran and
leading to the northern city of Mosul.
Likewise, the United States has added another 700
soldiers to the 3,500 who are active in the province
of Diyala, participating in a vast operation against
the resistance. AP reports that the troops were
transferred in a convoy of armed vehicles that
entered the city of Bakuba beneath a deafening
artillery attack.
According to figures from the aggressor’s
military command, direct attacks against the
occupiers in Diyala have increased by 70% since the
middle of last year.
Meanwhile, EFE reported that more than two
million Iraqis have been forced to leave the country
because of the conflict unleashed by the United
States, a figure to which should be added the 1.8
million refugees living within Iraqi borders.
Predictions from the UN make the situation even
more dramatic, given that it is feared that a
further million could leave their homes this year.
Syria has received the largest number of displaced
Iraqis, with one million, followed by Jordan with
750,000.
