Cuban foreign minister on official
visit to Panama

PANAMA, March 1.—Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque arrived in Panama today on an official visit during which he will head the island delegation in the 1st Inter-Foreign Ministers Consultation Mechanism.

The 3rd Joint Commission of the two countries is to run in parallel with the above meeting, divided into three areas: education and culture, science and technology and health.

A number of agreements are to be signed during the sessions, including one on cooperation on criminal matters and another on the recognition of advanced studies.

After participating in the opening of the Joint Commission on Friday, Pérez Roque goes to Veraguas province, west of the capital to open with President Martín Torrijos, the Omar Torrijos Herrera Ophthalmological Clinic.

As part of Operation Miracle, which has benefited tens of thousands of Latin Americans and Caribbeans, more than 5,000 Panamanians have undergone eye operations in Cuba free of charge.

Panama and Cuba currently have agreements on air transport, combating drug trafficking, investment promotion and protection, and the waiving of visas for diplomatic passports, according to the Panamanian Foreign Ministry. (PL)
