Cuban foreign minister on official
visit to Panama
PANAMA, March 1.—Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez
Roque arrived in Panama today on an official visit
during which he will head the island delegation in
the 1st Inter-Foreign Ministers Consultation
Mechanism.
The
3rd Joint Commission of the two countries is to run
in parallel with the above meeting, divided into
three areas: education and culture, science and
technology and health.
A
number of agreements are to be signed during the
sessions, including one on cooperation on criminal
matters and another on the recognition of advanced
studies.
After participating in the opening of the Joint
Commission on Friday, Pérez Roque goes to Veraguas
province, west of the capital to open with President
Martín Torrijos, the Omar Torrijos Herrera
Ophthalmological Clinic.
As
part of Operation Miracle, which has benefited tens
of thousands of Latin Americans and Caribbeans, more
than 5,000 Panamanians have undergone eye operations
in Cuba free of charge.
Panama and Cuba currently have agreements on air
transport, combating drug trafficking, investment
promotion and protection, and the waiving of visas
for diplomatic passports, according to the
Panamanian Foreign Ministry. (PL)
