Party leader affirms Vietnam’s will to broaden links with Cuba

HANOI, March 8.— Nong Duc Manh, general secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV), affirmed his country’s will to broaden links with the island during an audience with Fernando Remírez de Estenoz, member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Cuba and head of the International Relations Department at the CPV headquarters, PL reports.

He expressed his satisfaction that, despite the U.S. blockade and other difficulties, Cuba has been able to advance in diverse sectors.

He recalled how Vietnam also had to confront many difficulties, from natural disasters – six typhoons hit the nation during 2006 – to plagues and epidemics, but still the nation had made tremendous efforts and managed to achieve an economic growth of 8.2%.

He confirmed that today the CPV and the Vietnamese government have clearer objectives and lines on how to advance the country toward socialism with greater stability.

During the amicable encounter, Remírez de Estenoz described the current political panorama in Latin America, in which popular, progressive and left-wing movements has achieved substantial advances. In several countries, the governments – with the support of the people – have overwhelmed years’ worth of neoliberal policies, he reflected. For this reason, it is important that Vietnam today strengthens its relations with Latin America, he added.
