12th World Championships in Athletics
Dayron runs for the gold today
He has discomfort, but not an injury,
doctors confirm. Cuba, the only country with three
decathletes among the top eight after five trials
Enrique Montesinos
BERLIN.—
Both of Cuba’s “Dayrons” have classified for the
110-m hurdles and three of its decathletes are among
the top eight halfway through the event. These were
the highlights of Cuba’s performance in Wednesday’s
events at the 12th World Championships in Athletics.
In addition, discus thrower Yarelis Barrios has
ensured her participation in Friday’s fight for the
medals.
Amidst
the average quality of the initial hurdles events,
Dayron Robles told reporters he had felt pain, and
for a while it was assumed that that would
complicate his performance in today’s semifinals,
and thus access to the subsequent final, although he
also reminded another source of the local
organization that he was a good warrior and would
fight to keep his promise of presenting a gold medal
to the Commander in Chief.
MEDICAL OPINION ON ROBLES
After being evaluated by medical personnel, it was
confirmed that Robles was not injured, but was
suffering the same discomfort at the back of his
left thigh that has bothered him throughout the
season, in spite of which he remains undefeated.
His
coach, Santiago Antúnez, commented on Monday after a
press conference that Dayron tends to call the
discomfort an injury, but that if it was an injury,
he could not have competed, far less clock up the
13:04 he ran in Ostrava, the best time of the year.
In
his race, he started off slow (0.178 seconds) and
lagged at first after knocking the first vault, but
he pushed and was able to classify after coming in a
solid third at13:67, a modest time that would even
have been insufficient for the repechage (trial
heat), if he hadn’t come in third.
