Dayron seeking medal as a present
for Fidel

ALTHOUGH he will have to wait until August 20 to run in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles in the current Berlin World Championships, Dayron Robles, Olympic champion and world record holder, affirmed that "a medal would be a good birthday present for the Commander in Chief."

Talking over the phone, the 23-year-old athlete from Guantánamo and his trainer Santiago Antunes said that on August 13, Fidel’s birthday, they cut a cake to celebrate that important day, and the idea of the present came up.

Dayron has stated that his dream as a person and athlete is to meet Fidel. "When I was a child and saw on television the Cuban athletes giving their medals to Fidel when returning from major meets, I thought, one day I’ll do that too. For that reason, he is in all of my victories."

"He is doing well and is calm, waiting for the moment of the race; the world championship is one more competition; he has to run it well like he has done over the course of this season," said the experienced trainer. Antunes also led Anier García to two Olympic medals, the gold (2000) and the bronze (2004), and Dayron to the world record of 12.87 seconds and a gold medal in Beijing. (A.M.G.)
