Honduran coup
leaders continue the repression; another teacher
murdered
TEGUCIGALPA, August 2.— Another teacher was
murdered today in Honduras when he returned to his
house in the capital after attending the wake of
teacher Róger Vallejo, killed by a bullet to the
head last Thursday.
Leaders
of teaching unions identified the victim as Martín
Florencio Rivera Barrientos. He was stabbed 25 times
at 03:00 local time according to the first reports
obtained by the union.
Milton Bardales affirmed that Rivera Barrientos’
sole enemies are the authors of the military coup of
June 28: Roberto Micheletti, president of the de
facto government, and General Romeo Vásquez,
commander of the armed forces.
It is part of a campaign of intimidation against
the teachers union, the largest and most organized
in the country, he noted.
In Managua, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega
today called for the punishment of those who ordered
the crimes perpetrated in recent days against the
Honduran population.
Ortega was speaking in an assembly in Granada, 45
kilometers southeast of Managua, where he presented
inhabitants with 1,500 property titles.
In the Nicaraguan capital, Honduran President
José Manuel Zelaya stated that he had evidence that
Venezuelan and U.S. right-wing elements were
involved in the coup in his country, Telesur
reported.
In a statement to the TV channel, Zelaya noted
that Robert Carmona, a Venezuelan coup leader
residing in the United States, was one of the
individuals promoting the coup and designed
repressive actions against the Honduran people.
He also quoted Otto Reich, former assistant
secretary of state during the George W. Bush
administration who, according to a recording in
Zelaya’s possession, declares himself in favor of
the coup.
