Ecuadorian Parliament rejects U.S.
bases and asks UNASUR for measures of confidence
QUITO, August 25 (EFE).— The Ecuadorian National
Assembly has rejected the installation of U.S.
troops on Colombia military bases and has called on
the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) to
issue measures of confidence to be implemented
throughout the region.
On
Tuesday night, the Assembly approved a resolution –
68 votes in favor out of the 104 legislators present
-- rejecting “the decision of the government of the
president of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe, to allow a
significant increase of the U.S. military presence
in its territory.”
The
parliamentary majority, composed of the governing
Alianza País Party and various leftist groups,
called for a vote on the resolution, which expresses
“a profound concern over the harmful impact bases on
regional security and peace represented by the
presence of U.S. military bases.”
The
Ecuadorian parliament considers that the potential
expansion of military agreements between Colombia
and the United States “seriously undermines efforts
to integrate and construct an effective and real
peace in South America.”
The
resolution also emphases the need for Colombia to
renounce “the reprehensible and illegal doctrine of
preventative extraterritorial attack, and all
policies which threaten its neighbors’ sovereignty.”
