Violent
repression in Honduran city of San Pedro Sula
TEGUCIGALPA, August 4.—Approximately 50 arrests
and injuries resulted from a police and military
attack on demonstrators in the northern city of San
Pedro Sula, human rights defenders said today.
A
report from the Families of Detainees and the
Disappeared Committee (COFADEH) noted that the
aggression occurred when opponents of the coup
demanded the restoration of democratic order.
Many callers to the COFADEH detailed this brutal
attack perpetrated by police agents from the Special
Operations Commando (COBRAS) and troops from Brigade
105, stationed in that city, the report adds.
The repressive forces of the de facto government
violently attacked demonstrators with water tanks,
tear gas grenades and baton blows, leaving a number
of people injured.
News from the Globo Radio station quoted
witnesses who gave as an example of the violence the
case of a young man shot in the back. A woman who
tried to help him was pistol whipped across the
mouth by a police agent.
According to Prensa Latina, the COFADEH published
an initial report of 39 arrests, a number of them
with injuries from blows. It adds that the majority
were released after actions by human rights lawyers.
