Honduran coup forces attack ELAM
students
HONDURAN coup forces have attacked students from the
Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) who are
visiting the country and who were giving medical
attention to injured demonstrators.
In
a telephone interview from Mexico, Silvia Ayala, a
parliamentary deputy from the Democratic Unification
Party (UD), said the young people were beaten and
taken to a station after attending to victims of
police repression in San Pedro Sula.
Some
of the students had various injuries and bruises,
Ayala said. The parliamentarian is leading the
peaceful resistance movement in Honduras’s
second-largest city.
The
events reflect the worsening situation in that
Central American country, where the de facto regime
declared a state of emergency resulting from intense
demonstrations demanding the return of the rule of
law, which have been taking place for 47 days,.
Meanwhile, social tension is continuing to rise in
Honduras in the wake of military repression and the
prolongation of the crisis unleashed by the coup
d’état, with no negotiated solution in sight, Prensa
Latina reports.
Yesterday, August 13, the armed forces and the
police began a vast operation to disperse and detain
opponents of the regime who are participating in
marches to demand the return of constitutional order
and of President Manuel Zelaya.
The
National Front against the Coup D’Etat has issued
several press releases denouncing the brutality of
the military and police actions, including abuse,
torture and beatings of those arrested. (SE)
