Thousands on
anti-coup march in Honduran capital
TEGUCIGALPA, August 6.—Thousands of people
marched today through the capital’s main streets, on
the 40th consecutive day of resistance to the June
28 military coup in Honduras.
The
demonstrators, convened by the National Front
against the coup d’état, gathered at the final
extreme of Boulevard Morazán and ended their march
in the Parque central in the city’s historic quarter.
Juan Barahona, general coordinator of the Front,
affirmed that after 40 days of protests, the popular
resistance is becoming steadily stronger and more
organized every day.
Campesino leader Rafael Alegría noted that this
Thursday’s march was larger than that of the day
before, pointing to the ranks of thousands of people
chanting slogans demanding the end of the coup and
the return of President Manuel Zelaya.
All the people are against the coup, stated
Barahona, confirming the beginning of an indefinite
strike by the three labor union organizations to
demand the restitution of the rule of law, ruptured
by the military coup.
He added that the demonstration in the capital
was the second day of the National March of Popular
Resistance, which began in rural villages and
communities and headed for Tegucigalpa and San Pedro
Sula, the country’s two largest cities.
