Posada Carriles’
participation in assassination plot revealed
CARACAS, June 21.— Former Venezuelan vice
president José Vicente Rangel today identified the
international terrorist Luis Posada Carriles as a
participant in a plot to assassinate President Hugo
Chávez in El Salvador, PL reports.
Rangel said that the operation, code named "Omega,"
likewise had the participation of Vice Admiral
Carlos Molina Tamayo and business executive Tomas
Halberson, both of them Venezuelans living in El
Salvador.
The discovery of that plan impeded Chávez’ presence
at the inauguration of Salvadoran President Mauricio
Funes.
Rangel confirmed in his Sunday program "José Vicente
Today" broadcast by the private Televen channel,
that "Posada Carriles activated old contacts" for
the attempt, masterminded by Halberson.
Rangel stated that the Omega plot included the
purchase of missiles to bring down the presidential
aircraft, "linked to information that the entry of
weapons via the state of Zulia from across the
Colombian border is increasing."
Coincidentally, President Chávez confirmed today
that, in Tiniquillo, in the west of the country,
Venezuelan forces were attacked with machine guns
and rifle fire by an armed band with many
indications of being a paramilitary force.
