The disproportionate sentences handed
down to our five heroes are the fruit of political
revenge
•
Statement from Cuban workers for the
release of our five heroes, prisoners of the empire
WORKERS of Cuba and of the world:
Indignation, but not surprise, was stirred in our
workers — men and women educated with a profound
sense of justice — by the decision of the Supreme
Court, a body representing the highest level of
legality in the United States, not to review the
case of our Five unjustly incarcerated compañeros.
Never in the history of legal proceedings in the
United States have so many people and institutions
of renowned prestige demonstrated with such
irrefutable arguments the injustice to which our
five patriots have been subjected solely for
defending the lives of Cuban and U.S. people from
the criminal actions of terrorists protected by that
country’s government.
Parliaments, jurists’ organizations and Nobel
laureates in various countries, the special UN
agency on arbitrary detentions and some U.S. judges
have all understood that the disproportionate
sentences handed down to our five heroic compatriots
are the fruit of political revenge against a country
whose central sin has been to raise aloft the banner
of its dignity, sovereignty and self-determination
in response to the attempted hegemony of a powerful
and insolent neighbor.
We
are not surprised, because that so-called Supreme
Court merely followed the instructions of a
government that, to date, has changed only its
discourse, but has not in any way changed the
arrogance of the empire in its actions against the
peoples of the world, particularly against the Cuban
people, against whom it has maintained a blockade
for almost a half century.
It
is an increasingly less rational empire that is
allowing itself to be guided by an accumulated
hatred of our people, who have resisted an enormous
arsenal of all kinds of measures because we chose
socialism as our social system.
The
empire, the principal culprit in the global
catastrophe afflicting the world today, continues to
act hypocritically, because while it is upholding
the unjust sentences of the Five, beyond any logic
and in violation of its own laws, guarantees and
legal procedures, it is also harboring real
criminals who have unfinished business with the
legal systems of more than one country, such as the
case of Luis Posada Carriles, the mastermind of the
mid-flight bombing of a Cuban civilian airliner with
73 people on board. This is a disgrace that can no
longer be hidden.
We
call upon workers, the men and women all over the
world who are most suffering from the effects of the
global economic crisis engendered by the system
imposed by the empire, to join with us in our
denunciation and the mobilization of international
public opinion regarding this latest act of
injustice against René, Antonio, Gerardo, Ramón and
Fernando, five Cuban workers who do not deserve to
remain in prison one day longer for crimes which
they did not commit.
We
have the duty and the opportunity to make our voices
heard and to show our strength and determination to
see justice done.
We
particularly call upon the people of the United
States, battered by major economic difficulties and
full of hope, to join in this demand for justice and
not allow actions to continue in their name against
a people and five of its most worthy sons, who only
want to live in peace to build a better future to
the benefit of all humanity.
JUSTICE FOR OUR FIVE COMPATRIOTS IMPRISONED IN THE
