Chávez and Correa advocate unity for
true independence
CARACAS, October 7.—The presidents of Venezuela and
Ecuador, Hugo Chávez and Rafael Correa,
respectively, today agreed to defend unity as the
path to achieve real economic independence in the
region, reported PL.
Shortly
before beginning the quarterly review of 34
bilateral cooperation agreements, the two leaders
noted the need to strengthen integration mechanisms
in the light of the challenges faced in creating new
societies and confronting external pressures.
Chávez confirmed that both he and Correa are “ready
to open the way toward real unity between our
peoples, our governments, for real complementation
among our political, social and economic systems,
for real unity. We cannot fail the past and the
future of which so much is expected from us,”
reported ABN.
For
his part, the Ecuadorian head of state warned of
foreign interests striving to hinder integration
among countries – as promoted by these two nations –
and also confirmed the need to eradicate internal
problems, including bureaucracy, inefficiency,
mediocrity and indifference.
Meanwhile, he stated that the alliances must serve
to replace imports and eliminate competition among
sister nations.
The
two presidents also discussed their joint interest
in strengthening the Bolivarian Alliance for the
peoples of Our America (ALBA), which also includes
Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica,
Honduras, Nicaragua, and San Vicente and the
Grenadines, Telesur reports.
