At least 147 dead
in a double
attack in Baghdad
BAGHDAD,
October 25. — At least 147 people were killed and
more than 700 injured this Sunday in Baghdad after
suicide bombers drove two truck bombs into
government buildings, Iraqi Heath Minister Saleh al
Hasnawi stated, according to Telesur.
In the first attack, the truck bomb detonated
next to the Ministry of Justice. The second bomb
exploded almost simultaneously in front of the city
council, DPA reported. The strong explosions
destroyed dozens of vehicles stationed in the area
and caused partial collapses in nearby buildings.
It was the deadliest attack in Iraq in the last
two years.
Speaking on the matter, UN Secretary General Ban
Ki-moon condemned these "senseless and
indiscriminate acts of violence that repeatedly
target the innocent," and called on the country to
maintain the January 16, 2010 date as the period for
national elections.
The Arab League also spoke out against the
attacks from their headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, as
did NATO General Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
