WORKS by more than 60 Cuban artists decorate
China’s Gran Meliá Shanghai Hotel, inaugurated
yesterday by Manuel Marrero, Cuban minister of
tourism.
About
3,500 pieces of framed art, sculptures and
decorative objects adorn the facility’s nine floors.
According to the Cuban Ministry of Tourism, the
hotel is one of the best of its kind in the world.
The presidential suite, located on the 27th floor,
has four original paintings by Roberto Fabelo, while
in the lobby, a mural by Rigoberto Mena is another
significant addition.
Creations by well-known artists such as Amelia
Peláez, Víctor Manuel, Servando Cabrera and Wifredo
Lam are part of the 905 reproductions and prints
that can be seen throughout the hotel.
In parallel with the hotel’s official opening, an
exhibition was organized by Havana’s La Acacia
gallery, featuring works by Flora Fong, Nelson
Domínguez, Alfredo Sosabravo, Arturo Montoto and
other greats of the Cuban visual arts.
The Gran Meliá Shanghai, a Chinese/Cuban product,
is a five-star luxury hotel. It has 686 rooms and 66
suites, and impressive views of the Huangpu River
and the Puxi district.
The hotel represents the ultimate exponent of the
city’s ultra-modern design, established in the
traditional philosophy of Feng Shui, in which all
architectural elements coexist in perfect harmony
with their environment.
This facility is also a new symbol of the
friendly relations between Cuba and China, which
will mark their 50th anniversary this September. (AIN)
