developments to create life
HOLGUIN.—In vitro fertilization, a
complex scientific procedure which can bring joy to
persons with difficulties in having children, is
becoming a reality in the province’s Territorial
Attention to Infertile Couples Center, currently
undergoing an investment process which will provide
it with advanced technology.
Francisco Calcerrada Muguersia, a
specialist in charge of the project, informed
Granma that it is 90% completed; thus the out-patient
section of the facility should be ready for use by
the end of October.
Among the essential components which
will place it at the center of the Cuban public
health system’s advanced technology is a follicular
capture room; in other words, a place where female
cells or ovules are collected, as well as a
laboratory to prepare them.
In order to make the service more
functional, there are also rooms where patients may
remain before and after operations, enclosures which
are at the same time septic filters, and storage
areas for medicaments and supplies in general.
SCIENCE DEVOTED TO HAPPINESS
Dr. Eloy Verdecia Silva, head of the
Assisted Reproduction Service at the Vladimir Ilich
Lenin Hospital, in which the center is located,
commented that the team, comprised of specialists in
gynecology, endocrinology, microbiology and
psychology, as well as technical personnel and
nurses, is to put its medical knowledge and humanism
to the test, as has been the case thus far.
"We will be applying in vitro
fertilization with embryo transfer; that means
placing the fertilized ovum in the mother’s uterus.
As is typical within our health system, this will be
done free of charge. In other countries, depending
on the center and the personnel undertaking the
procedure, this would cost from $7-14,000.
"As time goes by and the training is
increased, we will move on to more complex and
effective techniques. We are in a constant process
of acquiring knowledge through training, workshops
and congresses which have all increased the level of
our scientific work and teaching."
The Center, he recalled, was
established at the end of 2011, in the Vladimir
Ilich Lenin Hospital, to treat patients from
Camagüey and the eastern provinces. Currently,
without the advanced technology, it is treating some

Odalys Martínez Abid, a laboratory
specialist, affirms that she feels great
satisfaction when patients who achieve pregnancy
come to greet her with much affection.
The same sensibility is to be found
in Dr. Yudania Torres Ramírez, an endocrinology
specialist. "Relating to couples involves a high
degree of tenderness so that they do not despair
because, if they maintain their confidence, they
overcome alterations in hormonal processes which can
obstruct the treatment applied."
It was not necessary to ask her if
she followed up on the babies after their birth. She
spontaneously searched in her purse and produced a
color photo, and explained, "These twins, Marlon and
Maykol, live in Rafael Freyre municipality and were
born on July 27 last year."
