Women of the
world demand release of the Five and condemn the
blockade
 LUANDA,
September 25.— The International Democratic Women’s
Federation (FDIM) today called the release of the
five anti-terrorist Cubans unjustly incarcerated in
U.S. prisons, PL reports.
Marcía Campos, president of the FDIM and leader
of the Women’s Federation of Brazil, announced the
verdict of the Atlanta Court of Appeals on August 9,
which declared their trial null and void.
In the meeting close to this capital, attended by
women from the five continents, the FDIM also
condemned the economic, commercial and financial
blockade that the United States had maintained
against Cuba for more than 40 years.
The meeting, opened by Cándida Celeste, Angolan
minister of the family and women, took place in the
framework of the 60th anniversary of the FDIM’s
founding.
Celeste highlighted the importance of this
encounter and affirmed that thanks to women’s
tenacity and firmness there had been many advances
in terms of their emancipation.
For her part, Campos stressed the positive role
that women have in the development of their
countries’ economy and seeking an equitable role on
society; praised the work of the distinct regional
offices; and called on members to continue closing
ranks in relation to the unity of women.
Yolanda Ferrer, general secretary of the
Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), highlighted women’s
role in the construction of a new society in her
country and the advances in meeting the Millennium
Development Goals, in combating unemployment, access
to potable water, universal elementary education,
environmental protection and others.
She emphasized that there are still great
inequalities and imbalances in the world provoking
situations like the more than one billion people
living in extreme poverty and no less than 852
million malnourished.
