Post article
creates space for others
to write about the Five
BY Jean-Guy Allard
 FOR
people in the United States in solidarity with the
Five, the Washington Post article on the case
of these anti-terrorist Cuban fighters held in U.S.
prisons brings important encouragement, after such a
long struggle to win space in the U.S. media.
"Just imagine. I was in Washington this weekend
when I bought the newspaper and saw the article.
What a surprise!" commented Gloria La Riva,
coordinator of the U.S. National Committee to Free
the Five (www.freethefive.org).
What is the significance of the article? "It is
the first time that a nationally important
newspaper has written on the Five. And it did so in
a very profound way... The other U.S. daily that is
as politically important, The New York Times,
has virtually ignored the case so far," La Riva said,
adding, "Of course, the Post is also the main
Washington daily, so it should have an impact," La
Riva added.
The Post has a large circulation: the most
recent figure is 690,700.
"The article is very long. It starts on the front
page and is about 120 centimeters long. It is
illustrated with a photo taken in Cuba of a poster
that includes the word ‘VOLVERAN,’" Gloria said,
explaining that the group she coordinates has been
distributing copies of the article to journalists
both locally and nationwide, urging them to cover
the case.
"I think that the Post article has created space
for others to write about the Five and for
politicians in Washington to think about the case,"
she noted.
"The article’s tone is objective, and it gives
space to Cuban leader Ricardo Alarcón; moreover, the
writer treats the mission of the Five as a
legitimate issue, something unusual here," the
solidarity activist commented.
